The William Penn and Knight Foundations joined forces in 2005 to stimulate interest in journalism within philanthropy. As the traditional newspaper industry began its rapid business decline, the accelerating loss of coverage of important civic issues was worrisome. “Five Things,” published in 2011 (PDF), and its updated edition in 2018 (PDF), were primers written specifically for leaders in philanthropy who wanted a guidebook on models of engagement with journalism.
